Back to School!

| Primary 5-er and Sec 2-er |
Morning hair, puffy faces - it's back to school we go again! (masks off for a quick and necessary photo to mark the start of the school year)
Praying for God to reveal to these young men His good and perfect plan for their lives and the purposes He has in store as they go about their day-to-day. I always have mixed feelings when I send them off into the big hamster wheel of school life. On the one hand, I am so excited to finally have some peace and quiet to think and do the tasks that have been on the back burner for a while. On the other hand, I will miss hearing their voices, feeling their presence and being able to hug them whenever I fancy. They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder and perhaps school helps maintain the fondness we feel for our younglings who would otherwise make us a little nutty!

Sec 1 Discovery Camp
We have barely started the new school year and Zac is already off to camp! The ACS (Barker Road) Outdoor Experiential Programme and Sec 1 Discovery Camp will be at Labrador MOE Outdoor Adventure Centre over the next 4 days and 3 nights. This will be the very first time that we won’t have contact with our firstborn for more than a day since no one is allowed their phones and contact with the "outside world" is only when there's an emergency. I’m already feeling that tug that happens when you realize how quickly they’ve grown and are starting on this journey that certainly feels like it leads away from you. How apt that the theme this year is "Beacon of Truth and Light" because even though navigating this new season of life could be quite dark and unchartered for us as parents and my little boy who is turning into a young man, we have the opportunity to let Jesus shine bright to lead the way.
He was excited and nervous leading up to camp day. It seemed to help quell some anxiety to have some new gear from Decathalon so he'd be well prepared. I noticed how his overseas experience on the trip to China really honed his planning and preparation. Each time he goes on an adventure away from us, I feel like he finds a bit more of himself as Zachary and not just who he is to us.
I am excited for him and am praying that he will find his tribe and his best mates this year starting at this camp. This is a precious experience for him and his classmates so I hope that he will approach it with an open heart and mind. He’s a lot braver, a lot tougher, and more able than he thinks!

He's back! Each young man was several shades darker and stood a tiny bit taller. I was certainly not the only parent in the room whose heart swelled with pride to bear witness to this slight shift in their carriage. Though they were exhausted, there was still this pride and sense of camaraderie they shared with their classmates.

See Zac Run!
Zachary was selected to participate in this year's school Track and Field Championships. He was quite looking forward to being part of the 8x60m class relay though waiting his turn under the hot tentage was a bit torturous. It was really really nice that Len managed to come in time to watch his son race.

Winter Is COMING!
We are super excited about our upcoming holiday to Japan in December. It's our first time and will be traveling with the Norohnas and the Ngs!
This trip is going to be a lot of firsts for our family. I haven't been to Tokyo or Osaka before and neither have the boys. It'll be their first time seeing snow when we go to Karuizawa and experiencing real cold. (Our trip to San Diego/LA 2 years back was mild compared to the weather in Japan!) The kids are loving the gear I've acquired through Carousell and can't wait!
I can't wait either!

A Stitch in Time
When you're a parent of boys, it's only a matter of time before you make a trip to the A&E so I'm told. I always imagined it to have involved scaling mountains, dirt-biking or some other death-defying act to warrant a trip to the emergency room. However, it turns out, practicing your forehand by yourself at the tennis court can result in an injury serious enough to warrant stitches.
My littler man was in a corner of the court while his brother and friends were working on their strokes on the other end. He apparently took a swing at a ball, spun around and lost his balance, landing on his chin. I didn't even witness it but turned to see my little one sprawled on the floor wailing his head off. When I ran to him, he lifted his face and I saw the blood trickle out and there was a lot of it. I didn't really need to look to know he needed stitches but look I did just to confirm what my gut already told me.
There was a time I was utterly convinced that I was the squeamish sort who would pass out or throw up at the sight of an open wound. Perhaps God made me of sterner stuff than I realised since I was able to calmly staunch the wound and soothe my son while waiting for Len who was rushing back from buying coffee and breakfast near by! Praise God for that!
God also provided for us in the form of our friend Terence who happens to be an A&E doctor and happened to be on duty that day. We were also so grateful for friends like the Ngs and Norohnas whose children were taking tennis lessons with ours as they helped look after Zachary while we headed to the hospital.
Even though little children are usually directed to KK hospital for such procedures since sedation was often necessary, I decided that I needed a familiar face and I believed that God would help Eli get through the whole thing. I was so thankful that we didn't have to wait long after registering at the hospital since seeing my poor little baby in such a sorrowful state made my heart ache. He was so good while we were signed in and he got onto the gurney by himself. Though he was nervous, he wasn't hysterical, in fact he was stoic for most of the time that Terence was preparing the equipment. He had to have 2 shots of local anesthesia to numb both halves of the split. The first shot went off with a loud and very painful yell. It took him a little while to calm down and a little quick thinking on Terence's part to sneak the 2nd shot. I was so tense throughout as I sat on the gurney with Eli's legs draped over my knee his hand in mine. Len and I were so proud at how very brave he was. We didn't need to hold him down or restrain him in any way, keeping him talking about Jurassic World seemed to be enough. 3 stitches later, Eli got his request for a plaster and he was almost good as new.
When I woke up that morning, I never thought I'd be at the A&E a few hours later. It just goes to show that life really is so unpredictable but God knows it all and provided for us in such a generous way. I don't think we would have been able to have felt so peaceful and comfortable during this ordeal if it weren't for his guidance and presence each step of the way. All glory to our God!

SJCK Open House 2014
Welcome to Sunshine 2 where the magic happens!!
It's Eli's very first Open Day at SJCK. We are so proud and so was our little man as he brought us around the classroom to show off the work they'd been doing this term. Their topic was on buttons!

All I Want For Christmas...
So we were waiting for his front teeth to fall out of his head and they maintained their "wobbly" status for a long long time. They finally decided they'd had enough hanging around and popped out (2 of them on the same day), all 3 of them!
One of the big upper teeth was helped out by a friend's son whose shoulder collided with Zac's face! Eek.

Bintan Bagus!
We're off on our very first Pattiselanno/Ng/Norohna/Lim holiday! We set off from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal after we had a quick lunch at the coffee shop. The adults were just as excited as the children since we have been talking about this for more than a month. It was just 3 families leaving this Sunday and the Lims come up on Monday.
On the ferry, the kids spent most of their time glued to the iPad while the parents got a bit of rest and prayed that sea sickness wouldn't set in.
There's something about being in a little group like this that makes even the most mundane thing like taking a bus transfer to the resort super fun.
We wasted no time getting into the pool and had hit the ground running.
The beach proved too tempting so we headed there after a splash-about by the pool.
